KIGALI CITY

Introduction

I fell in love with Rwanda the moment I saw these verdant, rolling hills rise up beneath the wings of the plane as we descend toward Kigali city Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda found in its center. This is the most beautiful and clean city. The city shares most of the experiences with Rwanda due to the different memorial sites in remembrance of the 1994 Rwanda genocide with some more lively spots around Kigali where tourists can experience the culture and beautiful scenery of the Rwandan cuisine. The city was a trade center after 1895 during the German colonial administration and it later became a regional center during the Belgian colonial period that was in 1919 up to 1962. Kigali became the capital upon Rwanda’s independence in 1962. The language spoken in Kigali The people in Kigali mostly speak French, English, Kinyarwanda and Kiswahili. Putting factors aside, French is widely used by both Kigali and Rwanda. but later, English was introduced as the formal language in order to favor all the others around such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi.

History of kigali city

Kigali is a capital city of Rwanda which is situated in the center of the country on the runaway river. This city was a trade center after 1895 during the German colonial administration and it came to become a regional center during the Belgian colonial period and that as in 1919 up to 1962. Kigali city later helped Rwanda to attain its independence in 1962. Later in 1994, thousands of Tutsi in kigali were killed by the Hutu gangs and the Rwandan army. The kigali city is composed of a Muslim quarter which spreads over four hills and that is the northeast of the city which is a squatter’s settlement and the south east which is an industrial area. Kigali city has an industry and this industry majorly deals in shoes, paint varnish, radio assembly and the tanning factories. Kigali city also has mining factories where by the headquarters were also constructed there in the 1980s. Kigali has roads which are connected and these roads include those which are paved, to all the four boarders of the country. The city has an international airport and a technical college.

Kigali memorial center

This is a place in Rwanda which was designed and reserved for over 250000 victims of the Rwanda genocide .The memorial center was built or put in the scene where the people were killed from .This was mainly put to remind the people who are coming up about the causalities and the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994 .The memorial consists of three exhibitions which are ;the permanent exhibition , the children’s memorial and the exhibition of the history of the genocidal violence around the world .

Belgium soldiers memorial site

This is a site in kigali where all the Belgian soldiers who were protecting habyarimina s wife were killed. The wife to habyarimana was called madam Agathe Uwiligiyimana. This lady did not like the Tutsi people and she hated them very much. It is noted up to now that the bullet holes are still there and anyone who comes is able to see them.

Hotel mille des Collines

This was also known as hotel Rwanda inspired the movie hotel. This was a place where most of the Tutsi people used to be hiding and they always had protection there during the genocide. This hotel is said to have protected very many people during this war. But all this was done under the help of Mr. Paul rusesabagina who was in charge of the hotel.

President palace museum

This memorial site shows where the wreckage of president habyarimana s plane can be found. The plane crash which killed the president of Rwanda was one of the triggers of the 1994 Rwanda genocide as it created hatred among the Hutu and the Tutsi people. Gorilla statue This statue is found in Kigali city Centre at the roundabouts in the city. This marks Rwanda’s tourism resource. This statue is of a male and female gorillas. These gorillas show the great value attached to gorillas by the world. This statue was part of the festivals in Rwanda which included the gorilla naming ceremony. Nyanza genocide memorial. This memorial is made up of four mass graves that is the one of the Tutsi people who had taken refugee at the ecole technique officielle grounds and were killed because the grounds were left un protected following the killing of the Belgian soldiers who were protecting the president’s wife a happening that scared the Belgian soldiers. Kigali city This city is known for its ancient materials for example the art crafts which attract very many tourists from different areas hence making Kigali a known city in tourism department.

These include the Rwandan culture, Kigali cultural village, haute basso, house of tayo and kimironko market.
